5 Players to Look Out for in this EPL Season

Jean-Michael Seri

A new signing to keep an eye on.

Anytime a player wanted by Barcelona somehow ends up at Fulham, he is worth checking out. Part of a Nice side that overachieved a couple of seasons ago, he has finally branched out of Ligue 1 and into a competitive league. Seri scored an absolute rocket with his first shot on target in just the 2nd game of the season, as Fulham are looking to make a top half finish in their first foray into the top flight look for this dynamic midfielder to be at the heart of Fulham’s rise.

Benjamin Mendy

Mendy looks reinvigorated this season.

Manchester City embarrassed the league last year without an actual Left Back, having been forced to play Fabian Delph and Oleksander Zinchenko, both attacking players, as Mendy snapped his ACL early on in the season. Since returning to the side, he hasn’t lost anything as he has been a menace down the left side of the pitch, especially in his outstanding display against Arsenal in the season’s opener. If he keeps this up, Mendy will force himself into the conversation for the world’s best left back next to Real Madrid’s Marcelo.

Eden Hazard

The best attacking player in the League just got one of the best attacking managers.

It’s silly to suggest Eden Hazard as a player to watch out for. Since making his debut in the league six years ago, the Belgian has arguably been the league’s best and most consistent player, spearheading Chelsea to two titles and earning himself comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Hear this, though. In his time at Chelsea the managers that he’s spent the most time with were Rafa Bentiez, Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, all defensively minded and pragmatic. This is the first time he will play under an attacking manager who emphasises pressing and energy, in Maurizio Sarri. Sarri worked wonders at Napoli with Dres Mertens and Lorenzo Insigne, imagine what a player like Eden Hazard could do.

Luke Shaw

It’s been quite the story so far for Luke Shaw.

The bright spot in Manchester United’s otherwise dull start to the season, Luke Shaw’s comeback from the outskirts of United’s squad has been inspirational. In his final season with Southampton in 2014, Shaw cemented himself as one of the best young left backs in Europe, before an injury-plagued first season at United stalled his progress. The following season, he started brightly before a devastating double leg break almost cost him his career, and as he revealed in a press conference this past week, his leg. He was on the periphery under Mourinho during the Portuguese’s first two seasons as manager, with attitude and discipline cited as weak points in Shaw’s game, but this season he’s back in the side, scored his first goal for the club and picked up United’s Player of the Month for August, before being selected back into the English National Team. He looks a brand-new player and should contend with Mendy as the two best left backs in England.

Lucas Moura

Lucas put on a show at Old Trafford.

He already won the Player of the Month for the league in August, and with good reason. With Harry Kane seemingly riddled with an injury, it’s almost been up to Lucas to provide the attacking spark for Tottenham. Bought in January it took him some time to adapt to the new system, but his form at the beginning of the new season as seen him become like a new summer signing altogether, as he is showing the potential that led PSG to make him the world’s most expensive teenager back in 2012. His highlight was his demolition of Manchester United in Tottenham’s 3-0 victory, and even with Son Heung-min returning from international duty, it’s hard to see Lucas being dropped any time soon.
